Dive Insight:
Lear began working with Palantir in 2023 to digitize its manufacturing operations and the company is already supporting its efforts to accelerate industrial automation.
The Tier 1 seat supplier’s “Innovative, Digital, Engineered and Automated” program, or IDEA, currently uses Palantir’s Foundry and Artificial Intelligence Platform. The software helps companies like Lear build custom applications and deploy AI-powered machine learning models to solve complex business problems, including supply chain optimization, fraud detection or predictive maintenance, ultimately improving operational efficiency.
“Palantir is a key component of our IDEA strategy to automate and streamline manufacturing processes and administrative functions across the company,” Lear President and CEO Ray Scott said in the release. “We have already seen significant improvements in global efficiency, creating a more agile and adaptable Lear.”
One of IDEA’s key focus areas is industrial automation. The program has already saved the Southfield, Michigan-based Tier 1 supplier over $30 million in the first half of 2025, and the cost savings are expected to compound over the remainder of the year, per the release.
Lear’s products for automotive OEMs include seating and electronic distribution systems, such as connectivity modules to ensure a vehicle operates more efficiently, according to its website. The company also manufactures 12-volt to 48-volt mild hybrid and high-voltage wiring harnesses for vehicles. Its customers include Ford Motor Co., General Motors, BMW, Stellantis and Volvo. The company says it is the largest U.S.-based automotive supplier.
Palantir Technologies emerged in 2003 under co-founder Peter Thiel, the entrepreneur and venture capitalist who also co-founded PayPal. The company builds AI-powered enterprise software for large-scale data mining and analysis.
