Toyota Motor North America promoted Elizabeth Gibson to group VP and general counsel at Toyota Legal One, the company’s in-house legal team, according to a June 2 press release.
In the new role, which took effect May 19, Gibson manages Toyota Legal One and is responsible for Toyota Motor North America’s legal direction and strategy, including providing insight concerning business protection and risk mitigation to other company leaders. Gibson reports to Sandra Phillips, SVP of enterprise integrity, chief sustainability officer and chief legal officer at Toyota’s North American division.
Gibson joined Toyota Motor North America in 2006 as deputy general counsel, according to her LinkedIn profile. In this role, she “worked across a wide range of automotive industry disciplines and strategized solutions for complex problems in North America and globally,” per the press release.
Toyota Motor North America also announced the impending retirement of Susan Elkington, effective Aug. 1.
Elkington currently serves as executive technical advisor for Toyota Global and North American Sustainability. She moved into the role in January, according to her LinkedIn profile.
Previously, in 2023, Elkington was appointed to a newly created position, SVP of electric vehicle supply, where she was “responsible for accelerating the company’s electrified transformation,” the press release said.
During Elkington’s tenure with Toyota, she also served as manufacturing VP at the company’s production plant in Gibson County, Indiana; general manager of the company’s global production control division; and president of Toyota's manufacturing facility in Georgetown, Kentucky. According to the press release, Elkington first joined Toyota in 1998 as an assembly engineering specialist.
